Pathogenicity While many Escherichia are commensal members of the gut microbiota, certain strains of some species, most notably the serotypes of E. coli, are human pathogens, and are the most common cause of urinary tract infections, significant sources of gastrointestinal disease, ranging from simple diarrhea to dysentery -like conditions, as well as a wide range of other pathogenic states classifiable in general as colonic escherichiosis. E. vulneris was the species most susceptible to ticarcillin and the only species that was highly resistant to fosfomycin (MIC > 256 micrograms/mL). The antibiotic susceptibility to fosfomycin was also unique for E. hermannii (MIC 32-128 micrograms/mL), whereas the natural populations of E. coli and Shigella showed lower MIC values. Escherichia vulneris is a species of Gram-negative bacteria in the same genus as E. coli.
